Thinking about a new sport for yourself or the girls in your life?

Lacrosse is a team sport played with a lacrosse stick and a lacrosse ball.  It is played by two teams of ten players each who use a long-handled stick called a crosse (or lacrosse stick) to catch, carry, and pass a small rubber ball with the aim of scoring goals by shooting the ball into the opposing team’s goal.  Lacrosse showcases the best of sports — speed, athleticism, skill, heart, determination — and it’s a recipe for a lifelong love affair. The first girls’ lacrosse program in the United States was established nearly a century ago and the sport continues to thrive. No other sport is growing faster at the high school or college level, resulting in countless opportunities for young women to make their mark.

According to USA Lacrosse Equipment Guide, minimal equipment is required in girls’ and women’s lacrosse due to its non-contact nature. A stick, mouthguard and protective eyewear are the only required items for most players. Headgear and close-fitting gloves are optional for field players. Goalies are also required to wear a helmet with face mask, a separate throat protector, padded gloves and a chest protector.

The rules of lacrosse govern games and equipment. USA Lacrosse works collaboratively with the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the NCAA to write the rules for our sport, and the organizations often work together on rule development and player safety efforts.
