What Is Men’s Collegiate Cross Country?
Men’s NCAA Division I cross country features 7.5–10K races on variable terrain—think grass, mud, hills, and more. It’s endurance, strategy, and grit all rolled into one grueling race.
Runners compete individually and as part of a team, with each school fielding seven runners. Team scores are tallied by summing the placements of the top five finishers—lowest total wins. It’s about individual grit and team depth.
Regional meets in November determine NCAA Championship qualifiers—starting with automatic berths, then at-large selections rounding the field to 31 teams and additional individual runners.
How the 2025 Season Plays Out
- Season Kickoff: Most teams hit the course in late August to early September
- Major Invitationals: Races like Nuttycombe, Joe Piane, and the “Pre-Nationals” in mid-October offer early glimpses of form and terrain strategy.
- Conference Championships: Held late October–early November—key for regional seeding and bragging rights.
- Regionals & Nationals: Regional qualifying races feed into the NCAA Championship—scheduled for November 22, 2025
Teams to Watch in 2025
- BYU Cougars
The defending national champions (2024) enter the season with strong momentum. They’ve built a reputation under coach Ed Eyestone for both individual brilliance and incredible depth. Their rivalry with Northern Arizona should once again highlight the season.
- Northern Arizona Lumberjacks
A dynasty in the sport, NAU has captured seven national titles since 2016. Known for high-altitude training and relentless pack running, they remain perennial contenders. Expect them to push BYU and anyone else eyeing the championship.
- Oklahoma State Cowboys
OSU continues to climb the ladder, consistently producing podium finishes. Their blend of experienced seniors and rising underclassmen makes them one of the most balanced teams in the country.
- Arkansas Razorbacks
The Razorbacks are always dangerous, boasting decades of cross country tradition. With strong SEC competition sharpening them throughout the fall, they’re positioned for a breakthrough season.
- Stanford Cardinal
Stanford’s mix of academic prestige and athletic dominance extends to cross country. Their lineup of talented recruits and proven veterans gives them the firepower to challenge for top spots.
- Colorado Buffaloes
Altitude-tested athletes and a long history of NCAA success keep Colorado firmly in the spotlight. If their top runners stay healthy, they’ll be a serious championship threat.
Other Schools in the Hunt
Don’t count out teams like Wisconsin, Iowa State, and Portland, who have shown the depth to shake up the podium on any given day.
