Unlike our last topic, which doesn’t have a definitive right or wrong answer, there are certain sports and times of the year where you can bet substantially more money than at other times of the year. So let’s dive in!
When thinking about the sports you can bet the most money on, start with the most popular sports we have in America. Football, baseball, basketball, and hockey are the four biggest sports in the country. They are the most popular, are on TV the most, and both fans and analysts know more players and rules in these sports, as opposed to lesser known sports such as Cricket or Rugby. The Sportsbooks know these are the most popular sports, of course, so they have most of their resources covering the games and related markets. In other words, the lines will be sharper because the Sportsbooks knows that customers want to bet on these sports. They are more confident in their lines for Week 4 of the NFL season than they are in the lines in a random Cricket match on a Tuesday. This is why you are typically able to bet more on the NFL than any cricket league. It’s the same reason we see much bigger bets in the playoffs than we do in the regular season. It all comes back to how much confidence the Sportsbook has on any given sporting event. Since the Super Bowl is the biggest individual sporting event of the year, it’s no surprise we regularly see high 6 figure and the occasional 7 figure bet on the game.
