The Diamondbacks have really struggled lately, having lost 6 of their last 10 games and first 2 games of the series against the Reds. The Diamondbacks NEED Zac Gallen to step up and stop this slide. He hasn’t pitched very well this year, coming into today with a 5.13 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. However, he’s coming off what is perhaps his best start of the year his last time out, going 7 innings and giving up just 1 earned run against the Braves. He’s actually pitched better on the road than he has at Chase Field this season. His .168 batting average against and 0.93 WHIP on the road speaks to his ability to pitch anywhere. Pitching has been the issue for the Diamondbacks during this slide, as evidenced by their 13-1 loss yesterday. They have scored 49 runs over their last 10 games, and scored 6 or more runs in 5 of those games. They SHOULD be able to hit Reds starter Brady Singer today, who’s also struggled. He has a 5.45 ERA and 1.49 WHIP over his last 7 starts. Statistically, he’s pitched better at Great American Ballpark than he has elsewhere, but the Diamondbacks have the lineup to hit anybody. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo knows his team needs this game and will be ready to use all of his premium bullpen arms to get this win to avoid the sweep. If Gallen can replicate the success he had in his last start, the Diamondbacks SHOULD be able to score enough to get the job done!
