PLAY OF THE DAY!
The Diamondbacks enter play as the 2nd wild card in the National League and just 1/2 a game behind the Padres for the top wild card spot! Today, they continue their series against the Rangers who are finishing out the strings of a wildly disappointing season. Merrill Kelly is coming off his BEST start of the season, throwing 7 innings of 2 run baseball on the road against the Giants. Kelly missed a few months of the season with a right shoulder strain, but the Diamondbacks are going to NEED him to get to where they want to go. Fortunately for Arizona, Kelly has been MUCH better pitching at Chase Field than he has on the road. At home, he’s pitched to a 3.10 ERA, .224 batting average against, and 1.03 WHIP. That’s BAD NEWS for Rangers starter Cody Bradford. The southpaw has had a tough time of it on the road this year, coming into today with a 4.85 ERA, .255 batting average against, and 1.23 WHIP. Not a SINGLE TEAM has scored more than Arizona’s 788 runs this year! They are AVERAGING 5.61 runs per game at home this year and 6.5 runs per game over their last 10 games. The Diamondbacks should have EVERY bullpen arm they need out of the bullpen. If Kelly can build off his successful last start, Arizona shouldn’t have ANY ISSUES getting the job done and continuing their wild card push!
