The Cubs enter play hanging on by a thread in the wild card race. They enter play 5 games back of the Braves and Mets with 13 games to play. They need to rattle off wins FAST! To that end, their ace, Shota Imanaga, SHOULD help them get off to a good start. Imanaga has EASILY been Chicago’s best starting pitcher this year, pitching to a 3.03 ERA and 1.02 WHIP. However, he’s been even BETTER recently, pitching to a STERLING 2.86 ERA and 0.82 WHIP in his last 7 starts. At Wrigley Field this season, he has a 2.93 ERA, .209 batting average against, and 0.90 WHIP! All of this is BAD NEWS for the Athletics, who struggled to score all year. On the road, they’re averaging less than 4 runs per game! Overall, they’re averaging just 3.6 runs per game in their last 10 games and have scored the 3rd fewest runs in the American League this year. Joey Estes goes for the Athletics tonight, and he’s been nothing short of DREADFUL on the road this year. He has a 6.18 ERA, .286 batting average against, and an UGLY 1.45 WHIP on the road. The Cubs ALSO have a better bullpen and are the ONLY team playing for anything in this game. At 29-46 on the road, Oakland has shown themselves to be one of the WORST road teams in baseball! If the Cubbies can get their bats going, Imanaga and the bullpen shouldn’t have ANY ISSUES shutting down Oakland’s lineup!
