The Padres enter play tonight just 1/2 a game up on the Diamondbacks for the top Wild Card spot in the National League. Needless to say, EVERY GAME is important for them! Yu Darvish makes his triumphant return to the mound after having not pitched for 3 months. He has dealt with injuries and a personal family matter but is ready to get San Diego back into the playoffs! It’ll surely be an emotional night for Darvish, but getting to face the Tigers at home isn’t the worst way to come back from an extended absence. The Tigers counter with rookie righty Keider Montero, who’s been ANYTHING but consistent to begin his career! He comes into today with a 5.17 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 13 starts. While he’s been a little better recently and better on the road than at home, this is going to be a TOUGH matchup for the youngster. With the day off yesterday, the Padres should ALSO have their ENTIRE bullpen ready and able to go! With Jason Adam, Tanner Scott, and Robert Suarez looming in the back of the bullpen, the Padres have one of the BEST bullpens in baseball! If Darvish can pick up where he left off, the Padres SHOULD be able to score runs off Montero. The Padres are AVERAGING 5.2 runs per game over their last 30 games! They have the better pitcher on the mound, more to play for, AND homefield advantage! That should be ALL THEY NEED to win their 3rd straight game!
